Recultivating a cult English race track

The historical Brooklands race track, the first circuit in the world to be purpose-built for motorsport, is a prime example of renaturation. It was opened in 1907 and closed in 1939. After years of neglect, the 63 hectare site was acquired in 2004 as the new location for Mercedes-Benz World. Measures implemented here included:

  • Habitat conservation for rare insects and reptiles
  • Clean-up including safe removal of rubble, weeds, old tyres plus toxic waste and other waste
  • Flood prevention measures for the buildings and land
  • Recultivation of the terrain, part conversion into a public park and foundation of the 24-hectare park (with children’s playground, skate park, basketball and football playing fields, forest hiking routes) for the community
  • Restoring the historical Brooklands race track
